Shaped Charge Tests in the SEDAS Project at the Łukasiewicz – Institute of Industrial Organic Chemistry
On July 24, 2026, field tests were conducted at the testing ground of the Explosives Technology Research Group at the Łukasiewicz – Institute of Organic Industry in Krupski Młyn as part of the SEDAS project (Safe and Effective Decommissioning of Arch Supports). The event was combined with a working meeting of the Polish representatives of the consortium, during which the results of the work to date and the directions for the project’s further development were discussed.
The SEDAS project is focused on developing safe and effective methods for dismantling and disposing of steel arch supports used in underground mining. One of the key areas of research is the use of modern blasting technologies and shaped-charge explosives, which can enable faster, more controlled, and safer operations related to the removal of mining infrastructure after the completion of mining operations.
The research was conducted to verify the assumptions regarding the operation of linear cumulative charges and to evaluate their effectiveness in the context of their intended applications. The tests provided valuable experimental data on the performance parameters of the solutions used and their impact on the effectiveness of the cutting process for structural components.
Experts representing Łukasiewicz – IPO, the Central Mining Institute (PIB), the Military University of Technology, and Łukasiewicz – IMN participated in the research. A joint analysis of the results will enable an assessment of the project’s assumptions and the identification of areas requiring further optimization. The results obtained represent a significant step in the process of developing innovative solutions that support the safe decommissioning of mining infrastructure.
The field tests confirm the importance of collaboration in developing modern technologies that address the current challenges facing the mining sector. The results of these tests will be used in subsequent stages of research and development aimed at developing a comprehensive solution that can be applied in real-world conditions.
